First on my small list may be the Coda electric car available with a 4 seats capacity and powered by a 728 cell edison battery-ion phosphate battery. The vehicle includes a range of 90-120 miles and can achieve a maximum speed of 80 mph. It comes with an interesting warranty: 3 years or 36,000 miles. An interesting fact is the battery which equips this car is covered for 8 years/100,000 miles. If you are interested in buying this electric vehicle you should know that the prices are around $37,000.
Nonetheless, the Volt is not something in GM's immediate plans. The idea for the Volt would require that a cost efficient 400-lb lithium-ion battery be found. lithium facts-ion batteries of this size are not currently available. Further advances in battery technology would be required to allow GM to consider making the Volt a production car. These are enhancements that could occur in as little as a year, or as many as 20 years. GM has stated that they feel the technology is almost there, yet a vehicle like this is probably about a decade away.
OLithium Ion (Li-Ion) - This was the latest battery technology before lithium polymer. They have a higher power density than NiMh and NiCd batteries. Li-Ion batteries generally come standard with most phones. For most people, this battery technology represents the best combination of size, capacity, and value. These types of batteries don't suffer from the poor memory effect and can be recharged anytime.
